Colonel Jim Corbett was born at Nainital in 1875, eighth child of Christopher and Mary Jane Corbett. His father was postmaster of Nainital( distance 90Km from Jim Corbett). He did his matriculation at Nainital’s Philanders Smith College. He did not pursue his academics any further. He spent his summers at Gurni House in Nainital while during winters he went down to Kaladhungi(distance 50Km from Jim Corbett) in tarai jungles. It was here he was taught how to fire a gun by his eldest brother. The abundance of wildlife around Nainital those days can be gauged from fact that Jim spotted tigers and leopards within six and a half-kilometer radius from temple of the goddess Naini, he developed a spontaneous affinity with nature.

At the tender age of ten he found himself addicted to hunting, he would just pick up and train his gun on any wild animal he encountered in Jungle. When he was eighteen he joined railways as assistant station master. Jim Corbett wrote many books in his lifetime and many books were written on him and his work. You may get Jim Corbett's books in almost all Indian languages- Marathi, Bangla (Benali), Uria, Kannad, Urdu, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi, English, Telugu and Tamil and almost all Indian and Foreign languages. The most famous and best seller books of Jim Corbett are : "Man-eaters of Kumaon", "Man-eating Leopard of Rudraprayag" and "Temple Tiger and More Man-eaters of Kumaon. There is also a memoir of "Savoir Jim Corbett" in Rudraprayag (near Gulabrai) enroute Chardham Yatra route, where big cat claimed to had killed 125 people over eight years, according to official records, still reverberate with scary stories. After World War II Jim Corbett settled in Kenya with his sister Maggie. It was there that at ripe age of eighty Jim Corbett (died) passed away on 1955, leaving behind legacy which still reverberate in valleys of Kumaon and Garwhal. In 1968, one of five remaining subspecies of tigers was named after him: Panthera tigris corbetti, Indochinese tiger, also called Corbett’s Tiger. In 1994 and 2002, long-neglected graves of Jim Corbett and his sister (both in Kenya) were repaired and restored by Jerry A. Jaleel, founder and director of Jim Corbett Foundation
